Bio:
Hot Irons provides a rare look into the social culture of African-American hairstyling, as explained by five Detroit hairdressers in preparation for the Hair Wars convention. Aided by striking cinematography and a brilliantly eclectic soundtrack, Dosunmu captures the hopes and pressures of the men who were laid off from the automobile industry and now compete for recognition and respect in the fantastically creative world of black hair styling. Andrew Dosunmu is a photographer and filmmaker who began his career in fashion working as a design assistant in the couture department for Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. He has worked as creative director and stylist for print ads, magazine editorial and album covers for artists such as Erykah Badu, Massive Attack and Public Enemy. Dosunmu directed his first music video in 1996 for Isaac Hayes and has since become an accomplished director, creating music videos for Common, Guru, Youssou NDour and Angie Stone among others. In 1999 Dosunmu directed and produced his first film, Hot Irons, which won the Laurent Award for Best Documentary at the FESPACO Film Festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Dosunmu was born in London, raised in Lagos, Nigeria and lives and works in New York City. - Trevor Schoonmaker
